Salvation Army Experiences Budget Cuts

The Salvation Army is facing a major loss in funding for the year. Virginia's budget, approved last year, uses a new formula to address homelessness. These cuts will affect Salvation Armies statewide.



The Salvation Army budgets have been cut statewide. The new budget cut will cost the Harrisonburg Salvation Army about $100,000. This will be cut directly from operating funds, which pay to power lights and heat and feed the hungry.

Because the local chapter doesn't provide low income housing and only a shelter, they no longer qualify for the original budget.

Capt. Duane Burleigh with the Harrisonburg Salvation Army already feels the budget crunch.

"This community has always come to the aid when it's needed to,” said Capt. Burleigh, “Fortunately we've never had to ask for help like this for the shelter, but we will continue to do what we do. We have to continue to do what we do. We have too many people that are counting on us to be there. And we will continue to be there one way or another."

The local homeless shelter has room for 72 people, but it operates at capacity most of the time.
